San Diego FC (MLS)

MLS expansion club that started play in 2025 and set expansion records for wins (19) and points (63). In 2027, MLS plays a short Sprint Season (February to May, 7 home matches) before switching to a summer-to-spring calendar.

San Diego Wave FC (NWSL)

NWSL club since 2022, and the team that first proved San Diego would fill a soccer stadium. The Wave have made the playoffs four times in five seasons and are hosting a quarterfinal in 2026.

Big Matches at Snapdragon

Beyond the two home teams, Snapdragon has become a regular stop for national teams, Liga MX clubs and championship matches.

• 2028 Olympic Soccer: Snapdragon is an Olympic soccer venue for LA28.
• US national teams: the USWNT played Colombia here in 2023.
• Concacaf: the 2023 Gold Cup semifinal, and San Diego FC's Concacaf Champions Cup debut in 2026.
• 2023 NWSL Championship
• Liga MX visits: Club Tijuana, Club América and Mexico's national team have all played here, and SDFC and Xolos meet for the Baja Cup.
• European clubs: Manchester United vs. Wrexham and Borussia Dortmund, both in 2023.

Soccer in San Diego Beyond Snapdragon

San Diego Sockers (indoor)

The San Diego Sockers are the city's longest-running soccer brand. The original club won 10 indoor titles between 1982 and 1992. The current version plays in the Major Arena Soccer League at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside and won the 2026 MASL championship.

Club Tijuana (Xolos)

Liga MX is a short drive away. Club Tijuana plays at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, and plenty of San Diego fans follow both Xolos and SDFC.

College Soccer

SDSU plays home matches at the SDSU Sports Deck. USD plays at Torero Stadium, which was also the Wave's first home in 2022. The two schools have played rivalry matches at Snapdragon.

Youth Soccer

San Diego's weather means kids play year-round, and weekend fields across the county stay full. Both pro clubs run youth programs: SDFC through the Right to Dream academy network, and the Wave through their youth soccer alliance and camps.

A Short History of Pro Soccer in San Diego

• 1968: The San Diego Toros play one NASL season at Balboa Stadium and reach the league final before folding.
• 1976: The San Diego Jaws play one NASL season at Aztec Bowl, then move to Las Vegas.
• 1978: That same franchise returns as the San Diego Sockers, the start of San Diego's indoor soccer era.
• 2020-2023: San Diego Loyal, co-founded by Landon Donovan, plays in the USL Championship at Torero Stadium. The club folds after the 2023 season.
• 2022: San Diego Wave FC debut in the NWSL and move into the new Snapdragon Stadium that September.
• 2025: San Diego FC begins MLS play, finishes first in the West and hosts the Western Conference Final at Snapdragon.
