The heart of Monster Jam competitions revolves around three main categories:
Racing: This is a traditional head-to-head tournament racing format, where the first truck to cross the finish line advances to the next round. The final race of the night determines the event’s racing champion.
Two-Wheel Skills Competition: Introduced in late 2017, this competition sees trucks performing impressive moves on two wheels. Attendees vote for their favorite truck’s performance via a score tracking website, with the highest scorer winning this category.
Freestyle: Drivers get two minutes (or one-and-a-half minutes for arena shows) to demonstrate their skills, executing stunts and tricks over ramps and junked cars. In 2020, a rule was introduced mandating that a truck must complete at least 30 seconds to qualify for a score. Attendees again determine the winner through online voting.
Monster Jam also includes additional events like the “donut” competition, ATV racing, speedster racing, and speedster obstacle course competitions. Crush cars, once a staple of the show, were officially removed in 2019.
The event tours major cities in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, Central America, South Africa, and Australia. The competitive season used to run from January to March, culminating in the World Finals in Las Vegas. However, since 2019, the season concludes in May in Orlando, Florida. There are both arena and stadium tours, with various drivers vying for spots in the prestigious Monster Jam World Finals.
The Monster Jam World Finals, often dubbed the “Super Bowl of monster trucks,” brings together top drivers to compete for racing and freestyle championships. The location of the World Finals rotates, with Orlando, Florida being a recent host. Notably, the 2020 World Finals were canceled due to concerns related to the international coronavirus pandemic.
In addition to live events, Monster Jam has made its mark in licensing, including officially licensed toy versions of monster trucks produced by Mattel’s Hot Wheels brand. Several Monster Jam video games have also been released, and media coverage includes television broadcasts on networks like NBC Sports and MAVTV, along with recaps on the official Monster Jam YouTube channel.
