The 2027 Sprint Season schedule is out. San Diego FC plays 14 matches from February 21 to May 8, seven at Snapdragon Stadium, all against Western Conference opponents. The home opener is Saturday, February 27 against Real Salt Lake.

The season doesn’t start at Snapdragon, though. It starts a week earlier at LAFC.

What Is the Sprint Season?

MLS is moving to a summer-to-spring calendar, the same one most of the world’s top leagues use. The 2027 Sprint Season bridges the gap: 14 matches (7 home, 7 away), Western Conference opponents only, followed by MLS Cup Playoffs starting in May 2027. The full 2027-28 season kicks off in July, with a winter break from mid-December through January.

With 14 matches instead of 34, each one counts for a lot more. A two-game skid in March is a real problem.

3. Overtime and Penalty Kicks: In MLS playoff matches (semifinals onward), if the score is tied after regulation, two 15-minute extra time periods are played. If still tied, it is decided by a penalty shootout.
4. No Promotion and Relegation: Unlike many soccer leagues around the world, MLS does not have a promotion and relegation system. Teams in MLS remain in the league regardless of their performance.
5. Salary Cap: MLS has a salary cap system, which limits the total amount a team can spend on player salaries to promote parity.
6. Allocation Money: MLS uses allocation money to allow teams to acquire or retain players and navigate around the salary cap.
7. Designated Players: MLS has a designated player rule that allows teams to sign star players without their entire salary counting against the cap. Each team can have up to three designated players.
8. Homegrown Players: MLS encourages the development of local talent by allowing teams to sign players from their own academies as homegrown players. These players do not count against the salary cap.
9. Video Assistant Referee (VAR): MLS uses VAR to review controversial decisions during matches, helping to ensure fair play.
10. All-Star Game: MLS hosts an annual All-Star Game where top players from the league face off against a prominent international club.
