2026 Playoff Push

San Diego FC is chasing a second straight trip to the postseason after last year's run to the Western Conference Final. MLS Decision Day is Saturday, November 7, 2026, the final day of the regular season, when the full playoff field and seeding get locked in. Below is what you need to know if, and when, Snapdragon gets loud for the postseason again.

2026 Playoff Format and Dates

The top nine teams in each conference make it. Seeds 1 through 7 go straight to Round One. Seeds 8 and 9 play a Wild Card game first.

  • Wild Card (Wednesday, November 18): Single game, No. 8 hosts No. 9. Winner faces the conference's No. 1 seed.
  • Round One (November 20 to December 2): Best-of-3 series. Every team hosts at least once, and the higher seed hosts Games 1 and 3.
  • Conference Semifinals (December 5-6): Single elimination, higher seed hosts.
  • Conference Finals (December 11-12): Single elimination, higher seed hosts.
  • MLS Cup (Friday, December 18): Single elimination. The finalist with the better regular-season record hosts.

Round One trips people up. It's not aggregate goals. Each game is its own win or loss, and a game tied after 90 minutes skips extra time and goes straight to a penalty shootout. That's how Portland stole Game 2 from SDFC in 2025 after a 2-2 draw.

One more wrinkle: there's an 11-day gap between Decision Day and the first playoff game for the November international break. If SDFC lands in the 8 or 9 spot, the Wild Card is a Wednesday night game, so plan your week accordingly.

2026 is also the last December MLS Cup. The league moves to a fall-to-spring calendar starting in 2027.

2025 Playoff Run: Historic Inaugural Season

In their inaugural 2025 season, San Diego FC set MLS expansion records for points (63) and wins (19) and earned the Western Conference's No. 1 seed. They beat Portland 2-1 in a best-of-3 Round One series and Minnesota United 1-0 in the Conference Semifinals before falling 3-1 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the Western Conference Final on November 29, 2025.

  • Conference Semifinal: SDFC 1, Minnesota United 0 at Snapdragon Stadium, Anders Dreyer goal in the 72nd minute (November 24, 2025)
  • Western Conference Final: Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3, SDFC 1 at Snapdragon Stadium (November 29, 2025)

Move Fast

Playoff tickets don't go on sale until a home match is confirmed, and the window between "confirmed" and "sold out" can be tiny. In 2025, the Western Conference Final sold out in less than 24 hours. If SDFC clinches a home date, be ready to buy the day tickets drop, or expect to pay resale prices.

Digital Tickets
