San Diego FC hosts Club Tijuana (Xolos) at Snapdragon Stadium on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, for the second annual Baja Cup, presented by Modelo. SDFC won the inaugural meeting 4-2 last year, and the two clubs have already met once more since then — SDFC beat Xolos 1-0 in a Leagues Cup group match at Snapdragon this past August. This one's a friendly, not a competitive fixture, but with SDFC 2-0 against their closest geographic rival heading in, Xolos will be chasing their first win in the series.

The Rivalry

San Diego and Tijuana are separated by about 20 miles and share the busiest land border crossing in the world, along with a regional soccer culture that predates either club. SDFC and Club Tijuana announced a five-year partnership in May 2024 — the first agreement of its kind between an MLS club and a Liga MX club — with an annual friendly at Snapdragon Stadium as the centerpiece, later named the Baja Cup.

The first Baja Cup, played September 16, 2025, went 4-2 to SDFC. Xolos led twice — Vitinho opened the scoring in the 6th minute, and Christian Leyva put them back in front in the 51st after Alex Mighten had briefly equalized. SDFC answered with three unanswered second-half goals: David Vazquez in the 76th minute, Manu Duah's header off a Vazquez corner in the 80th, and a Right to Dream Academy guest player in the 88th. Vazquez was named Player of the Match for his goal and assist.

The clubs met again on August 9, 2026 — this time with points on the line. Drawn into the same Leagues Cup group, SDFC beat Xolos 1-0 in front of a sold-out crowd of 31,538 at Snapdragon, with rookie forward Bryan Zamblé scoring the game's only goal in the 22nd minute. It was the first competitive meeting between the two clubs, and it puts SDFC 2-0 in the head-to-head series heading into the September 16 rematch.

San Diego FC

San Diego FC's 2025 debut season is considered the most successful expansion campaign in MLS history — first in the Western Conference, with a run to the conference finals. Club Tijuana (Xolos)

Club Tijuana competes in Liga MX, Mexico's top flight. Founded in 2007, the Xolos were promoted to the first division four years later and won their first — and so far only — Liga MX title in the Apertura 2012. The club draws a significant following on both sides of the border, and Snapdragon crowds for this fixture reflect it.

One matchup worth watching: Xolos' Gilberto Mora, the 17-year-old attacking midfielder who was the youngest player at this summer's World Cup, lining up against SDFC's David Vazquez, last year's Baja Cup Player of the Match. Mora's move to a European club is reportedly a matter of when, not if — this could be one of the last chances to see him at Snapdragon in a Xolos shirt.

Why September 16

The date isn't incidental. September 16 is Mexican Independence Day, a significant date for Mexican and Mexican-American communities across the region, and both Baja Cup matches have landed on it. Last year's edition featured mariachi performances for both national anthems and a folklórico program before kickoff — matchday entertainment for 2026 hasn't been announced yet, but it's reasonable to expect something similar.
