When San Diego Hosted the Final (2023)

Snapdragon Stadium hosted the NWSL Championship on November 11, 2023, and it delivered. NJ/NY Gotham FC beat OL Reign 2-1 in front of 25,011 fans, a record crowd for an NWSL final at the time.

Lynn Williams put Gotham ahead in the 24th minute, and Rose Lavelle equalized five minutes later. Esther González headed in the winner in first-half stoppage time. It was Gotham’s first title, one year after finishing last in the league.

The night was also a farewell. Megan Rapinoe, playing the final match of her career, went down injured in the third minute. Ali Krieger played all 90 minutes of her last game and retired a champion.

The Reign reached that final through San Diego: they beat the Shield-winning Wave in the semifinal at Snapdragon two weeks earlier.
