San Diego FC advanced to the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 after defeating Liga MX's Pumas UNAM 4-2 on aggregate. The expansion club won Leg 1 convincingly at Snapdragon Stadium on February 3 (4-1), then gutted out a 1-0 defeat in Mexico City on February 10 — keeper Pablo Sisniega making eight saves in the rarefied air at 7,500 feet. Next stop: reigning Liga MX champion Toluca FC in March.

Leg 1: March 11 at Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego
Leg 2: ~March 18 at Toluca, Mexico (8,750 ft elevation)
Leg 1 at Snapdragon wasn't even close. SDFC's attack was relentless, building a 4-1 cushion that gave the club a comfortable advantage heading to Mexico City. The crowd was electric, and the performance gave fans a real sense of what this team is capable of on home turf against international competition.
Leg 2 was a different story. Pumas needed to win 3-0 to advance on away goals, and they attacked with that urgency from the first whistle. SDFC wilted in the altitude, surrendering 62.5% of possession and getting outshot 25-5. The only thing standing between them and a very uncomfortable aggregate was goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega — Mexico City-born, intimately familiar with that stadium, and absolutely dialed in. He made eight saves, including a point-blank stop of Uriel Antuna in the 12th minute and back-to-back denials late in the game. Coach Mikey Varas called him "an absolute monster for us."
Pumas did break through in the 47th minute when a Pedro Vite free kick caught Sisniega off his line and bounced into the net untouched — his only real miscue all night. But a 1-0 defeat was enough. SDFC advances.
Toluca is a significant step up. They're the reigning Liga MX champion, not a club in a 15-year trophy drought like Pumas. And their home stadium sits at 8,750 feet — nearly 1,300 feet higher than Mexico City. SDFC learned a hard lesson about altitude in Leg 2; that lesson will matter in March.
The good news: Leg 1 is at Snapdragon on March 11, giving SDFC another chance to build a cushion in front of their home fans before heading south.
The Concacaf Champions Cup is the premier club tournament in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The winner earns a spot in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The tournament runs through a single-match final on May 30, 2026.
SDFC's MLS regular season opens with a home opener against CF Montreal on Saturday, February 21 at 7:30 PM before the Toluca matchup in March.
